March 24, 2014

At 13:57 hours the Birdsboro-Union Fire Department along with Quint 6 & Tanker 6, (Monarch) Montgomery County Tanker 57, (Stowe) Chester County Engine 64-1 for RIT, (North Coventry) and M680 Station 3 were dispatched to this location by Berks County Communications Center (BCCC) for a reported shed fire. At the Blackwoods Golf Course 510 Red Corner Rd.

During the Departments response Quint 6 arrived and reported a working fire. A 2nd alarm was requested by Engine 7 as they arrived to find a 100'x50' Pole Barn well involved in fire. The building was light weight steel construction, which contained several commercial landscape machines used to manicure the Blackwood Golf Course, a golf cart repair area, and fuel storage.

Quint 6 and Tanker 6 arrived on location and placed hand-lines in service to attack the fire. When Engine 7 arrived on location the crew deployed additional large diameter hand-lines. Tower 7 arrived on location and was instructed to setup for elevated master streams. Due to the large volume of fire, a decision was made to only attack the fire from the exterior, known as a defensive attack. The roof of the building collapsed approximately 20 minutes after the fire department arrived.

Due to the area having no fire hydrants, Engine 7 established a portable pond site in the parking lot for the responding tankers to unload their water. The tankers then drove to a near by pond to refill. The bulk of the fire was knocked down with extensive overhaul. The fire was placed under control at 3:30PM, and crews awaited the arrival of Met-Ed to secure power to the building and allow the owner to remove the collapsed building materials with a tractor.
