But fire anywhere else can make your summer kick-off barbecue memorable for all the wrong reasons. Safety tips Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors. The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. Keep children and pets away from the grill area. Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill. Never leave your grill unattended. Charcoal grills There are several ways to get the charcoal ready to use. Charcoal chimney starters allow you to start the charcoal using newspaper as a fuel. If you use a starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire. Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources. There are also electric charcoal starters, which do not use fire. Be sure to use an extension cord for outdoor use. When you are finished grilling, let the coals completely cool before disposing in a metal container. Propane grills Check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it for the first time each year. Apply a light soap and water solution to the hose. A propane leak will release bubbles. If your grill has a gas leak, by smell or the soapy bubble test, and there is no flame, turn off the gas tank and grill. If the leak stops, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again. If the leak does not stop, call the fire department. If you smell gas while cooking, immediately get away from the grill and call the fire department. Do not move the grill. Be sure to use safe grilling practices as the peak months for grilling fires approach – June and July. Gas grills constitute a higher risk, having been involved in an annual average of 6,900 home fires in 2005-2009, while charcoal or other solid-fueled grills were involved in an annual average of 1,100 home fires. In 2005-2009, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 8,200 home fires involving grills, hibachis or barbecues per year, including an average of 3,400 structure fires and 4,800 outside fires. These 8,200 fires caused an annual average of 15 civilian deaths, 120 civilian injuries and $75 million in direct property damage. More than one-quarter (29%) of the home structure fires involving grills started on a courtyard, terrace or patio, 28% started on an exterior balcony or open porch, and 6% started in the kitchen. Flammable or combustible gas or liquid was the item first ignited in half of home outdoor grill fires. In 50% of the home outdoor fires in which grills were involved, 55% of the outside gas grills, and 36% of gas grill structure fires, the fire started when a flammable or combustible gas or liquid caught fire. Crews yesterday were able to lay over 4000 feet of 1 ½ inch water hose line along the containment line in the area of St Peters Road. These hose lines also had smaller side laterals branching off from it every 200 feet to supply water to hand crews conducting the burn out operations. Once the burn out operations were completed, crews returned to mop up, an activity that ensures all hot spots burning near the control line are extinguished. The smoke plume from these operations was visible to many residents, which prompted calls to local 911 call centers. Crews today will continue mop up operations in this area. These crews are comprised of Volunteer Fire Crews from the area as well as Bureau of Forestry Personnel from Williamsport, Clarion, and Clearfield. They are also patrolling the other parts of the control line. Presently, there is more than 6 miles of fire perimeter. Of particular note is the cooperation of the residents along St Peters Road. They are treating the fire crews to extra snacks and goodies as they go in and out of the woods to the fire line. Signs expressing their thanks are also posted along St Peters Road. Weather conditions for today are not as favorable as they have been in the past couple of days. Temperatures of 66 degrees, wind speeds of 18 mph, and a relative humidity of 19 percent are expected at the fire location. Erratic fire behavior in the fire area is expected. Union Twp, Berks County and Warwick Twp, Chester County, now have open burn bans in effect. Residents of these municipalities are reminded that no open burning is permitted. There has been significant interest from the public as to wanting to see the fire area. The public is advised to keep away from the area. It is an extremely dangerous situation with many burnt falling dead trees. Hiking trails through French Creek State Park and Hopewell Furnace Historic Site east of Pa 345 (Shed Road) are closed. Persons trespassing in these areas will be cited. The St Peters Road and Hopewell road are restricted to access only by residents and fire control personnel. Members of Pennsylvania DCNR (Department of Conservation and Natural Resources) arrived and assumed command of the fire due to it being on State land. Additionally resources were then called in from the area. Companies from Berks, Chester, Lancaster, and Montgomery County worked through the night to contain the fire. Area residents that bordered the park were requested to evacuate due to high winds pushing the fire toward the residential area. Fire apparatus was placed at each residence that was believed to be in jeopardy of the fire. The fire was contained throughout the night with no damage to any residence. Members of DNCR Forestry continue to extinguish the entire fire. In the end, approximately 450 acres were involved. Sat, 10 Mar 2012 21:00:59 GMT http://www.bufd7.org/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=102 Change Batteries in Smoke and CO Alarms This Weekend http://www.bufd7.org/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=100 Daylight Saving Time begins March 11 WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is urging consumers to replace the batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms this weekend for Daylight Saving Time. This year, Daylight Saving Time begins on Sunday, March 11. Fresh batteries allow smoke and CO alarms to do their jobs saving lives by alerting families of a fire or a buildup of deadly carbon monoxide in their homes. CPSC estimates there was a yearly average of 386,300 residential fires resulting in nearly 2,400 deaths between 2006 and 2008. Two-thirds of fire deaths occur in homes where there are no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. That is why it is important to replace batteries at least once every year and to test your alarms every month to make sure they work. CPSC recommends consumers have smoke alarms on every level of their home, outside bedrooms and inside each bedroom. CPSC estimates there was an annual average of 183 unintentional non-fire CO poisoning deaths associated with consumer products between 2006 and 2008. CO is called the "invisible killer," because it is a colorless, odorless and poisonous gas. Because of this, people may not know they are being poisoned. Carbon monoxide is produced by the incomplete burning of fuel in various products, including furnaces, portable generators, fireplaces, cars and charcoal grills. That is why it is important to have working CO alarms in the home, on each level and outside each sleeping area.
